Whether you're just contemplating marriage, or already planning your wedding day, your church in Knockholt or Halstead wants to help and support you. The Church of England have a fantastic website with everything you could possibly need for planning your perfect wedding, should you want any further details having read the outline below.

As for what music to choose, we recommend contacting our organists, or if perhaps you are planning to use recorded music, speak to our churchwardens who will be able to advise you on what facilities we have and what sounds best in the acoustics our churches. A fantastic resource for helping you choose your hymns can be found in our own uniquely tailored guide written by our resident experts. Recordings of more popular choices appear on the above website.

If you are getting married at St Margaret, Halstead, there is a choir which can be present at your wedding to help lead the hymn singing. Upon request, they can also sing a suitable piece by themselves during the service, such as during the Signing of the Register.

There are minimum charges for flowers for decorating church if you decide to use our resident floristry experts who know what works best in our churches. You may, of course, use your own florist or arrange flowers yourself. If so, please ensure that all flowers are cleared away the following week. In the case of several weddings on the same day, please liaise with the other couple(s).

With regard to the publication of Banns, for your information, if one of you resides in another parish, Banns must be read there also. It is your responsibility to arrange the reading of Banns with the vicar of that parish within three months of the marriage. You MUST bring the Banns Certificate with you to the rehearsal as the marriage cannot take place without it.

Couples often ask for advice on the Order of Service. Our suggested order is:

  • Entrance of the Bride (e.g. Bridal Chorus by Wagner)
  • Welcome
  • Hymn 1
  • The Declarations
  • The Reading(s)
  • The Address
  • The Vows & Giving of Rings
  • The Blessing of the Marriage
  • Hymn 2
  • Prayers concluding with The Lord's Prayer
  • Hymn 3
  • The Blessing
  • The Signing of the Registers
  • The Recessional (e.g. The Wedding March by Mendelssohn)

If you have any further questions or queries after reading this information or visiting the Church of England dedicated site, please feel free to contact the Rector.
